Designing a Home Theater System for a Rainy Day

Designing a Home Theater System for a Rainy Day

Summer's finally here, which means you can shake off those winter doldrums and enjoy the sunshine. However, the weather doesn't always cooperate with your best-laid plans, and heavy rain can derail planned outings to the ballpark, campsite, beach or amusement park. When bad weather rears its head, you need a fallback option.

That's where home theater systems come in and save the day. The best home theater setup provides an immersive, cinema-quality experience that rivals the great outdoors.

Start with a strong AV receiver

Regardless of whether you plan on a five, seven, nine-channel or greater setup for your home theater, a high-quality AV receiver is a necessity. In addition to your speakers, your HD television, media players, video game consoles and other devices all require a good receiver to support the latest high-resolution audio and video formats.

A top-tier AV receiver also makes switching between devices a breeze, eliminating time spent unplugging different devices just so you can watch a movie on your Blu-ray player. With that in mind, be sure to check how many inputs an AV receiver has — in particular, HDMI inputs — before making a purchase. You don't want to realize post-purchase that you can't connect all your devices to your brand-new receiver.

Speakers make the experience

If there’s heavy rain and thunder outside, your home theater system needs some serious muscle to overcome that external noise. Include at least one subwoofer in your setup to provide the rumbling bass that underscore action flicks and Hollywood blockbusters. Get more depth and richness by pairing two subwoofers on separate audio channels — just be sure your AV receiver supports such a setup.

A surround sound system is an absolute must for a high-quality home theater, starting out at 5.1-channel arrangements and going all the way up to 15 channels or more. More speakers and channels yield greater richness and depth for your home theater soundstage.

Wireless equipment like the HEOS AVR offers a nice balance between cinema-quality sound and a clutter-free viewing space. There are no cables to trip over or unsightly wires lining your baseboards, so you can enjoy watching your favorite movies and maintain your preferred home aesthetic.
