Sound Bite: Music's Biggest Night Recap

Sound Bite: Music's Biggest Night Recap

When the Grammys rolled around, we were a flurry of emotions: excited to see what’s hot in music this year, a little scared/on-the-edge-of-our-seats to see AC/DC, Paul McCartney, Ariana Grande, Tony Bennett, Madonna and Lady Gaga all share the same stage on the same night. When it comes to all things music, you know we’re watching. And, in our heart of hearts, we knew that we couldn’t let you, the loyal Vibe readers, head out into the world this week without knowing the key highlights of what happened during the over 3-hour show (yes, it was 3 ½ hours. And that DID NOT include the red carpet coverage. You’re welcome).

So, we took the sacrifice. Poured ourselves a cocktail and settled in thinking we were going to get to finally break out of the looming depression brought on by the Big Game commercials with some amazing performances, hilarious hair-do(n’ts) and epic red carpet fails. Read on for everything worth knowing about the music awards show.

The Red Carpet Didn’t Disappoint

Yes, watching celebrities walk down a colored piece of fabric laid on concrete is… technically… really boring. But, you also end up with some solid Instagram fodder like:

Keisha Cole looking like a construction zone.

Rihanna looking akin to an umbrella (ella – ella – eh).

Sia… being Sia?

And Iggy Azalea who made us head to the kitchen for a sandwich.

Now for the Music

When AC/DC hit the stage, we were ready to hop on the highway to hell and were really jealous of the free devil horns (even though the Grammys were total buzz kills about them).

Sadly, the rocking didn’t continue throughout the night. We slowly but surely (slow being the key point, here) were lulled into a slight stupor. Performance highlights included ELO. Jeff Lynne was so cool he got Paul McCartney AND Queen Bey up and dancing – and didn’t even have to take off his shades to do so. Madonna and Annie Lennox also caused a stir in the Twittersphere with their performances. We were also pleasantly surprised at the harmony between Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga (who wudda thunk it?).

Who Cleaned Up

Basically, in terms of awards – yes, you may have forgotten the whole point of this evening was the awards – all you need to know is that newbie Sam Smith pretty much won the Grammys and took home four awards: Best New Artist, Best Pop Vocal Album, Song of the Year, and Record of the Year.

Other Noteworthy Moments

By the time the show was over it was nearing midnight and we were becoming delirious, but we wanted to give you a rundown of what else happened; so here it is:

  • Pharrell wore a bell hop uniform during his performance of Happy – even though in his Instagram pic, it looks like he just got caught for stealing someone’s room service
  • Colored suits were in, with host LL Cool J wearing a royal blue get-up and Sam Smith donning a dapper maroon look
  • Prince showed up to announce the Album of the Year
  • Kanye jumped on stage (again). This time, when Beck won Album of the Year. Still not cool, dude.
  • Kristen Wiig and mini dance prodigy Maddie Ziegler performed Sia’s Chandelier – all while Sia stood facing a wall – we didn’t get it either.
  • Sam Smith thanked the guy that broke his heart and lead to the Stay with Me album - (bet that guy is regretting that now!)
  • Did we mention the show seemed long? Like reallllly long?

Now that you know we have your back on all things amazing – especially when it comes to music – come talk with us on Twitter about what you’re digging right now. We’re ready with our opinions about pop culture, music and basically anything awesome and definitely are ready to hear yours!
